Broadsides or The Word on the Street

At the NLS

At the National Library of Scotland, an interesting exhibition entitled The Word on the Street, shows how Scottish people learnt about things when there were no newspapers or television. They read broadsides on the streets. You can browse broadsides by subject or titles. Try ‘slavery’, and you will read the lyrics of a song about Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriett Beecher Stowe.
