Gitta, my mother
This photo of my mother was taken around 1950. It is a landmark. My parents moved from selling clothes on open air markets to becoming hardworking shopkeepers. I was too young then and can’t remember the time when they would get up in the middle of the night, whatever the weather and take off to go to some Normandy market, but my brother, who is ten years older than me, can.
My mother used to tell us the story of her first time on the market. She hardly spoke a word of French and was selling socks on the stall of a couple of her friends. One lady customer said that the socks were expensive and Gitta, thinking that she wanted to know if they were good quality said “Oui, oui, Madame.” Of course, that didn’t help her sell the socks!
But later on, she became a very good saleswoman, much better than my father, who was more of an accountant.
